Saturday, September 8, 2007 “Songs of Repentance, Songs of Forgiveness”
Music, it has been said, speaks to us at the deepest levels of our souls. That’s why we so often turn to music – its melodies and lyrics – to express truths we can express in no other way.
This year, on Selichot evening, we turn to music – haunting melodies with powerful lyrics penned by Jewish singer/songwriters – to open up issues of repentance and forgiveness, certainly the most important issues of this High Holy Day season.
In discussions with Rabbis Eric Goldberg, Robinson and Strom, we’ll look at three pieces of music, “The Story of Isaac” by Leonard Cohen, “When the Deal Goes Down” by Bob Dylan and “King Without a Crown” by Hasidic rapper (really!) Mattisyahu, each with their own particular ‘take’ on the subject of repentance and forgiveness.
It should be a wonderful, thoughtful and provocative evening.
Then, we’ll join together in the sanctuary for Selichot -- our beautiful pre-Holy Days service of song, poetry and prayer. We’ll then conclude with a solemn ceremony in which we change the torah mantles to their “Holy Day whites.” This is truly one of the most inspiring and touching services in our synagogue year, and wonderful preparation for the approaching Days of Awe.
