Rabbinic Scholar Rabbi Paula R. Goldberg E-mail Rabbi Goldberg
Rabbi Goldberg has been the Rabbinic Scholar at Shir Ami since 1999, a position which allows her to do what she loves most -- share her love of Judaism, teaching and learning, particularly of Midrash.
Rabbi Goldberg received a Bachelors degree from Adelphi University with a degree in Biology and Chemistry. Her journey into the rabbinate was sparked when she and her family joined Shir Ami (then known as Bucks County Jewish Congregation) in 1977. A folksinger at that time, she directed the fledgling choir and soon became interested in the world of Jewish knowledge, music and liturgy. She studied in Adult Education classes and then at Gratz College. She taught in Bar and Bat Mitzvah students and continued to study everything and anything that was offered. Rabbi Strom was an inspiration and a guide along the way. In 1988 she entered rabbinical studies at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and was ordained in 1993.
Rabbi Goldberg served as student rabbi in Lockhaven Pennsylvania, and, after ordination, as rabbi in Washington, New Jersey. In 1995 she entered Jewish Theological Seminary graduate school and is a doctoral student in the field of Midrash.
At Shir Ami she teaches in the Adult Jewish Studies program, tutors and rehearses Bar and Bat Mitzvah students, and maintains much of the creative liturgy used at Shir Ami such as the Kabbalat Shabbat and Chevrat Torah services. She is a resource for Rabbis Strom and Robinson, as well as for the religious school, Sisterhood and Men's Club. She loves teaching in all venues, as well as answering impromtu questions about Judaism anywhere, anytime.
She has written or co-authored articles in Beginning the Journey: A Women's Commentary on Torah, Feigenson, ed. (New York: WRJ, 1997), In the Beginning... Having a Jewish Baby and Jewish Parenting Made Simple (UAHC Department of Outreach), and The Matriarchs' Dance: A Women's Haggadah (self-published).
Her song "Halleluya-Kol HaN'Shama" has been published in Shabbat Antholigy II, Transcontinental Music Company, New York.
Rabbi Goldberg lives in Newtown with her husband Harvey, and enjoys family time with her two sons and daughters-in-law—Steve and Melenda in Yardley; Joshua and Lydia in Langhorne. |
