Janis Jacobs, President e mail

Janis JacobsTwo and half years ago, while attending the URJ Biennial in Houston, Tx, I was sitting at breakfast with, then president, Teri Siegel and Executive Vice President, Alan Sheinberg. Earlier, Alan had mentioned that he wanted to discuss something with me. Since back at home, we were in the midst of our Echad Campaign and my responsibilities for the Midnight at the Oasis celebration was over, I naturally thought he was going to ask if I would take on some of the other responsibilities pertaining to the campaign. However, when he asked if I would be Executive Vice President during his upcoming tenure as president of Shir Ami, it not only came as a surprise… the shock almost made me do a “Danny Thomas spit take” with my morning beverage.

Of course, I was honored. However almost immediately, the realities of such an honor made me ask in utter horror, “Am I ready?” Both Alan and Teri assured me that over the next 2 ½ years, I would learn a great deal and their positive attitude truly helped allay some of my trepidation. I told Alan that I would need a few days to think it over, although I knew right away that I could not say no to Alan and, of course, to this opportunity and honor.

Two and ½ years have flown by. Alan and Teri were right. I have learned so much. Although I can not claim to know everything, I will strive to face the challenges and opportunities that will be presented. Aside from the obvious financial issues Shir Ami faces, my primary goal is to bring a feeling of belonging to our congregants. Shir Ami has something to offer people of all ages and interests. Aside from our amazing clergy, we have a myriad of committees, wonderful adult education courses, Chevrat Torah, our choir that can’t be beat, SHAFTY, Sisterhood, Men’s Club, 50 Something, the new BOOMERS group, and HaGesher, just to name a few. We have some incredible fundraisers that are social, great fun and at the same time, help our synagogue. We have speakers. We have the opportunity to assist in the community. There is so much happening that stems from Shir Ami. Participating in one or more of these great offerings will give you a sense of belonging.

If you think about it, Shir Ami needs you as much as you need Shir Ami. You, as congregants of Shir Ami are our I am looking forward to this journey of discovery and faith. I’m sure there will be some bumps in the road; however I know everyone’s heart is in the right place, always trying our best to take care of one another, knowing that surely God is accompanying us all.

It is an honor, privilege and blessing to serve Shir Ami and I thank you for this opportunity
