Midrasha Curriculum

7th Grade Curriculum
The 7th grade curriculum is comprised of six courses. Each course is nine or ten weeks in length and each student will have the opportunity to take each course as the year progresses.

The following courses are being offered:

Israeli Film: Using the highly acclaimed Israeli film “Walk on Water,” students will have the opportunity to study issues prevalent in the news today, including the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the rise of Anti-Semitism.

Jewish Ethics: In this class, students will have the opportunity to investigate real-life dilemmas and the Jewish texts, teachings, and responses that guide Jews through similar situations.

Reform Judaism: This class will provide students with a better understanding of the who, what, when, where and why of the Reform Movement—from it’s humble beginnings to it’s modern day flourishing.

Middot: This class will take a look at teenage life through the prism of Jewish Virtues (middot) such as humility, truthfulness, not embarrassing others, showing courage, taking care of one’s body, and striving to bring peace in relationships.

Israel: This class will place students in the ever-changing political, military and religious environment of our people’s homeland. Just as the news coming out of Israel is changing each moment, so too this class will develop as the school year progresses, focusing primarily on those issues, people and topics at the center of daily life in Israel.

How To Be a Mensch: This class focuses on the idea of repairing the world through acts of Tikkun Olam. Students will explore why repairing the world is not optional for Jews, and the balance between helping the Jewish community and the larger world community (i.e. Should a Jew help the Jewish community before helping the larger world community?)

8th Grade Curriculum
The 8th Grade curriculum is comprised of four courses. Each course is nine or ten weeks in length and each student will have the opportunity to take each course as the year progresses.

The following courses are being offered this year:

Pirke Avot: In one sense this class is geared to introduce students to Mishneh and Talmud, two of the most central texts in Jewish thought and practice today. In another sense, this class is geared to teaching students about those values and ethics that our religion’s great rabbis held at the core of their own belief system.

Yiddishe Momma: In this class, students will have the opportunity to investigate a number of “hot” topics in the realms of politics, world events, and social issues.

Being a Jewish Teen: In this class, students will have an opportunity to share their own life experiences and learn what Jewish tradition teaches regarding those issues that are part and parcel of teenage life in Eastern Pennsylvania.

Bible: In this class, students will study the Bible in Hebrew and English, discovering the texts and stories that provide the foundation of Jewish belief and give rise to questions that Jews should ask each and every day of their lives.
